Senior Test Technician

Job Description


Mechanical Duties:

  • Assemble (and disassemble) products for customer samples and test samples.

  • Conduct tests for product validation, quality audit, warranty analysis, line-return analysis and other special requests from Product Engineering. Evaluate transmission (and clutch) failures and document findings as necessary.

  • Use instrumentation and computers to control and monitor testing. Record and report results as needed, meeting testing timelines for urgent test projects.

  • Install product onto vehicles as well as instrumentation installation.

  • Provide routine maintenance of machine tools and test machines and keep the work area clean and orderly.

  • Develop a background of knowledge and understanding of engineering practices based on ongoing substantial training and acquired experience.

  • Perform basic driving function tests in commercial vehicles, including extended road tests as needed

  • Write detailed work instructions for departmental use.

  • Utilize instrumentation such as accelerometers, displacement transducers, pressure transducers, data recorders, speed pick-ups, thermocouples and microphones to complete work tasks.

  • Troubleshoot and identify root cause of general mechanical and electrical problems and bring to closure through either repairing, using internal resource to fix problems or contact outside resources if warranted

  • Perform competitive transmission evaluations. Confirm Software/Hardware function of Automatic Transmissions.

Administrative Duties:

  • Understand Lab Quality/ISO 16949 Compliance requirements and operate in accordance with these standards

  • Design and execute lab test stand MSAs (Measurement System’s Analysis) for local and global labs.

  • Participate in Lab Continuous Improvement process (Concern Management System)

  • This role will assume responsibility in one or more of the following lab Administration roles:

  • Lab organization/5S coordination

  • Lab HS&E compliance coordination

  • Lab Facilities maintenance coordination

  • Lab supply and Capital Equipment purchase fulfillment coordination

  • Test vehicle fleet coordination

Required Education and Experience

Associates Degree in EET, MET or related field with at least 4 years related work experience.

Experience and Skill Requirements


• Experience with powertrain installations into medium-duty and/or heavy-duty commercial trucks.

• Familiarity with standard transmission and vehicle diagnostic software, and advanced trouble-shooting of powertrain systems with Automatic Transmissions.

• Experience with general heavy-duty truck repair is required, specific experience with heavy-duty truck transmissions/clutches or heavy truck industries is desired.

• Capable of managing a variety of engineering projects, preparing formal reports, and clearly communicating with cross-functional teams.

• Knowledge of plumbing as applicable to pneumatic and hydraulic systems.

• Knowledge of simple to complex electrical systems as applicable to troubleshooting or instrumenting test setups.

• Familiarity with standard transmission and vehicle diagnostic software, and advanced trouble-shooting of powertrain systems with Automatic Transmissions.

• Familiarity with machining, ability to read blueprints, ability to use measuring equipment and a strong mechanical ability are required.

• Possession of and/or willingness to obtain a CDL license (and any required valid medical card or other endorsements) within the first 6 months required.

• Must be able to obtain passport and willing to travel, both domestically and internationally, for up to two weeks at a time.

• Proficiency in MS Office Suite including VBA, specifically Excel Ability to handle assemblies and sub-assemblies that weigh up to 75 lbs as well as mount these products for test onto test fixtures with mounting bolt torques up to 600 ft-lbs (3 ft torque wrench).

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


• Experience disassembling and reassembling Automatic Transmissions desired.

• Experience with automotive/trucking communication links (SAE J1939; SAE J1587, etc) preferred.

• Experience with any/all of the following: CANape, CANalyzer, MOBiDIG, EEPROM, Testman or External Level Converter (ELC)

• Knowledge of Engine/Transmission/Vehicle/ABS CAN Interactions preferred.

• Knowledge of Commercial Truck advanced features: predictive GPS, predictive cruise-control, EBS, etc. preferred.

• Six Sigma Green Belt status preferred.

• Experience with electronic equipment and test control programming preferred.
