VMware Staff Engineer II - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

You will be the technical leader for the programmatic interfaces for VMware’s strategic big bet in managing Kubernetes on any cloud and from any device. Tanzu Mission Control allows you to build, manage, and operate a self-service Kubernetes platform that can run anywhere, ranging from the public cloud to the datacenter to the edge. You will leverage your expertise to help shape designs for interfaces across a wide range of microservices and drive cross-team initiatives to ensure consistent customer and developer interfaces across the Tanzu portfolio. You will contribute to open source frameworks that will extend the Kubernetes experience to support customer, developer and Tanzu platform needs. You will be working as a collaborative partner in a diverse environment whose teams care about the products they are creating, how they create them, and the quality of the result.

What is primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

You will have the opportunity and responsibility to provide guidance and direction for interfaces (API, CLI, UI) for both Tanzu Mission Control and the overall Tanzu portfolio of products and services. You will be responsible for making a great and consistent experience for end users, external developers and partners extending the Tanzu platform.

Success in the Role : What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

As a Staff Engineer II on the Tanzu Mission Control team, you will be the technical lead responsible for setting technical direction and driving outcomes including:

  • Architecturalreviewanddesign reviewfor all developer interfaces, including APIandCLIinterfaces,in the SaaS control plane.

  • Designing systems, controls and processes to help ensure the consistency of interfaces provided viathe extensibility platform enabling 2ndand 3rdparty extensions to the Tanzu platform.

  • Cross-team collaboration to build relationships within TMC and with partner teams across VMware to adopt theconsistentstandardsand practicesforinterfaces acrosstheentireTanzu portfolio.

  • Delivering key initiatives necessary to meet customers’ needs aroundconsistent interfaces for both user and developer workflows.

  • Contribute to open source and internal cross-team development to extendKubernetesexperience to simplify developer and user scenarios and support the goals of the Tanzu platform.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As the interface technical lead for Tanzu Mission Control, you will be a respected subject matter expert, establishing the vision and best practices for interface development and delivery across the full range of our service and platform.

You will bring keen analytical and design skills, coupled with outstanding communication daily to help engineers across the team deliver consistent and easy to use interfaces.

You will leverage your understanding of Kubernetes API patterns to build APIs that are easy for customers and developers to understand and use. You will use your excellent collaborative and persuasive skills to drive consensus across Tanzu Mission Control and partner teams across VMware to deliver consistent interfaces for TMC and the Tanzu portfolio.

The hiring manager for this role is Lars Opstad, Director, Tanzu Mission Control Common Services. His expertise includes delivering a wide range of products and services, including product, services and security solutions at VMware and Microsoft. Lars’ leadership style provides his people the opportunity to demonstrate ownership of their areas, while helping them refine their plans to better connect to the customer need and other parts of the larger business.

The team structure for Tanzu Mission Control supports independent development toward common goals. Each team owns one or more microservices that make up TMC. The Tanzu Mission Control Interface technical lead role is designed to be cross-cutting and providing technical direction to multiple teams. This role is remote-friendly and the team has a strong remote culture.
