VMware Senior Open Source Engineer – Cloud Native Community Engagement, Tanzu - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

The Community Engagement team at VMware is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help advance our mission of driving adoption of Tanzu solutions within the CNCF Cloud Native Landscape. As part of the team, you will help raise awareness of our opinionated path through the CNCF Cloud Native Landscape by contributing to CNCF projects, building open source tooling, and enabling community members to engage with Tanzu solutions.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

In this role, you will help bring awareness of the technical approach to VMware’s opinionated path through the CNCF landscape. Building off a strong understanding of Kubernetes, you will be responsible for executing towards our roadmap, building new tools, developing pathways for community users into Tanzu solutions, and integrating into community projects, like Cluster API.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Build tooling, automation, and documentation aligned with our community roadmap.

  • Create community awareness, participation, and drive downloads of Tanzu community tooling.

  • Become a contributor to open source projects that impact our downstream efforts. For example, Cluster-API.

  • Contribute to roadmap and direction, collaborating with the technical lead, community, and field teams.

  • Foster influence through blogs, videos, and contributions to open source projects.

  • Identify positive and negative user experiences that drive direction of the roadmap.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Research and develop cutting edge cloud-native software.

  • Proficiency in Go with an open mind towards other languages, frameworks, and tools.

  • Participate in open source communities that provide perspective for our downstream approaches. For example, Special Interest Group (SIG) Cluster Lifecycle and end user experience SIGs, such as SIG-Apps.

  • Provide feedback to peers through code and design reviews.

  • Believe in agile software development methodologies.

  • Write tools, automation, and documentation aligned with our roadmap.

  • Provide feedback based on open source learnings throughout product management and engineering to improve Tanzu solutions’ user experience, and highlight new areas of need.

  • Participate in customer briefings on technologies in the cloud native space providing insight and experience from Kubernetes users and VMware customers.

  • Maintain knowledge of platforms, architectures and the CNCF landscape with a deep understanding of Kubernetes and Cluster API.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Amanda Katona, Community Engagement Director in the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid engineering team. Amanda joined VMware in 2018 after leading open source marketing for The {code} Team representing open source efforts at Dell Technology and Dell EMC. Amanda is passionate about building diverse and inclusive communities. If she’s not working, she’s traveling the world looking for the perfect path less traveled with her daughter.
