Laboratory Technician - Sample management

Job Description:

Sample Technician is responsible for preparation and inventorying of samples in an R&D environment. It includes physical labor related to sample grinding in various mill types; large and small lab equipment washing; and sample inventorying/ retrieval in a highly regulated environment. The role also includes duties to enable compliant sample chain of custody and inventory management and maintaining GLP guidelines.

Under the general direction of the Sample Management lab supervisor, the Tech supports laboratory operations directed at the development of new agricultural products and new uses for existing products. The technican will perform a variety of activities directed at facilitating the conduct and execution of studies in the laboratory/greenhouse.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Have knowledge of all sample preparation techniques commonly used in the department, including sample milling and lyophilizing.

  2. Assist in receiving and transferring samples that are submitted for preparation and subsequent analysis.

  3. Use all of the sample preparation equipment. Be able to recognize when the equipment is not working properly and is in need of maintenance and to transmit this information to their supervisor.

  4. Be familiar with the following department documents pertaining to sample preparation and ensure that they are followed: a. SOP ECL-21 Sample Handling, Identification, Preparation, Storage, and Tracking of Samples from Residue and Transgenic Crop Studies b. Equipment manuals and related operational and safety procedures.

  5. Be aware of GLP requirements pertaining to sample processing and ensure that they are always followed.

  6. Maintain timely and accurate sample preparation and tracking records.

Minimum Requirements:

  • AS or BS degree in science or similar preferred.

  • Ability to perform mechanical procedures that require some physical strength

  • Basic Computer knowledge is required; experience working with Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) a plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The primary job site is in a set of labs on a basement level floor. There is no natural lighting and limited cross-lab contact with other areas. Additionally there are temperature variations between labs and walk-in freezers. The candidate must be comfortable operating in these environmental conditions and should be comfortable performing autonomous work in a high quality fashion.
