Job Title: Chemist II

Apex Life Sciences is seeking a Chemist II for a fast paced personal care company. This position is a full time, permanent position. This position conducts research, analysis, formulation and experimentation on new and existing products. They will support the requirements of the Branding Department and work closely with team members to bring product to market.


  • Formulate new product and reformulate existing products based upon benchmark prototypes, product development profiles, marketing direction and innovative formulation ideas.

  • Insure products are stable for 3 months at 40°C and 3 years at room temperature. Follow up as needed to insure formulas introduced to market are stable.

  • Insure all approved formulas are passed over to production with standards and specification that result in a reproduction of all physical characteristics of a laboratory batch.

  • Troubleshoot and problem solve unresolved or new formula issues.

  • Conduct research and analysis activities according to applicable government regulations, manufacturing processes, or other considerations.

  • Create prototypes and product samples as needed. Record batching and evaluation results in lab notebook. Perform formulation, physical and analytical testing as appropriate.

  • Coordinating with outside raw material suppliers to obtain documents and other information as needed.

  • Reviews research, testing, quality control and other operational reports to ensure that R&D standards are met by our internal and external production partners.

  • Plan and perform bench experiments in support of development projects.

  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic and lab notebook records. Ensure these records are kept in suitable and reliable storage.

  • Provide recommendations for continuous improvements in practices and systems to improve performance and enhance efficiency and quality.

  • Initiate and confirm scale-up pilot batches and initial production run batches are successful.

  • Stay current with the latest technology, actives, and delivery systems.

  • Advises and assists in obtaining patents for products, processes, or equipment.

  • Introduce and qualify new raw materials.

  • Interface with manufacturing/production, QC, purchasing, sales and marketing teams.

  • Communicate with outside vendors and laboratories.

  • Provide technical assistance/support for other departments as needed.

  • Supervises and maintains laboratory work area in a neat and orderly fashion.

  • Assures that laboratory equipment receives appropriate maintenance and calibration in accordance with a standard schedule.

  • Communicates essential information to the employees within the department and/or within the Company.


  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.

  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

  • Experience with viscosity, pH, and sensory testing would be helpful.


Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Chemistry, Biology from four-year College or university is preferred; and/or 5 plus years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
