Biological Researcher – Insect Bioassays (Beekeeping experience strongly desired)
Long term contract role (12+ month) with good possibility for extension. Pay for this role is flexible and will be based on background and experience.
General Job details:
This role will support the insecticide biology team where he/she will be responsible in assisting the insect bioassays, formulation and application of insecticides; commonly using e-pipette, hand sprayer or track sprayer). Some common tasks include general lab maintenance, maintaining a hygienic environment in the insectary, rating bioassays, sample formulation and application for specific insect bioassays, and data entry.
This role will work extensively with bees utilizing proper PPE and training. Areas that you may interact with bees on the job may include: honeybee apiary, bee laboratory, insectary, or greenhouse based on the needs of the group at any given time.
During the active honeybee season responsibilities include:
Weekly hive inspections
Regularly lifting hive bodies which can weigh up to 50 lbs.
Using a hive smoker
Removing frames from the hive to note egg laying, larvae numbers, and capped brood numbers
Caging queens to meet sampling needs in the lab. This involves mild swarming behavior when handling the queens.
Performing oxalic acid treatments in winter and late fall.
A minimum of an AS or BS degree in Biology or related field
Preferred to have previous Beekeeping/apiary experience. Please make sure to highlight this experience on your resume so it is easily visible
