Job Summary:

The EHS Specialist provides hands-on safety and health support to production personnel. Responsible for planning, establishing, implementing, and maintaining a variety of health, safety, and environmental programs and objectives, and coordinates training to assure the highest possible degree of safety for employees. Monitors federal and state safety and health regulations and provides technical support to plant personnel to ensure compliance.

Essential Functions:

  • Works closely with staff in operations, management, human resources, purchasing, production, and maintenance.

  • Provides information and technical safety and health support to production personnel.

  • Prepares written safety and health programs and policies.

  • Identifies company safety training needs and develops and coordinates safety training programs.

  • Participates in new process reviews, including process hazard analysis, standard operating procedures, employee training, etc.

  • Assists and supports plant leadership to implement engineering controls to minimize safety and occupational health hazards.

  • Aids plant personnel in selection of appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Maintains a safety library (e.g., videos, regulations, reference manuals).

  • Promotes safety and health awareness through internal company signage, email memoranda, newsletters and specific training programs.

  • Chairs the monthly plant safety committee meetings.

  • Assists as needed in implementation of a near miss communication program and preparation of requested reports.

  • Reviews process/operating procedures/records and provides input for safety and health considerations.

  • Understands federal and state occupational safety and health regulations and monitors regulatory changes as they occur.

  • Provides technical support to plant personnel to ensure compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations.

  • Advises manufacturing plants of regulatory changes with which the plants must comply, providing sufficient advance notice so that compliance on the effective date of new regulations is ensured.

  • Audits practices of manufacturing plants to ensure compliance with company programs and federal/state occupational safety and health regulations.

  • Monitors lost-time injuries/illnesses, restricted duty work, and worker’s compensation claims.

  • Reviews monthly plant safety meeting minutes and safety inspection reports and follows up as necessary.

  • Reviews injury/illness and non-injury incident investigation reports and follows up as necessary.

  • Administers first aid to ill and injured persons and provides transport to an urgent care clinic or emergency room.

Supervisory Responsibility: Frequently operates in a professional office environment. Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and laminators. While performing some duties, there may be some exposure to fumes and/or airborne particles, and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the production environments can be loud and require hearing protection.

Physical Demands: This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work is required as needed.

Travel:Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel can be expected

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

Regularly required to talk and/or hear. Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

This position has no direct reports, but does serve as a coach and mentor for all other positions.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene or environmental discipline

  • Previous experience in managing environmental, occupational health or safety programs within a manufacturing (plant) environment

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be able to pass EVerify.
