Position Title: Director of Automation Engineering
Location: Fishers, IN
Reports To: VP Supply Chain, Food
The Director of Engineering (DOE) is an integral role within Supply Chain operations that creates and executes the strategic vision for the Food Business Unit’s engineering and automation organization, processes (asset reliability, project implementation, etc.), capital investment and productivity program, environmental sustainability, and continuous improvement initiatives that is aligned with the business strategies. The successful candidate will be an established engineering technical leader with a proven track record of delivering results through automation across a supply chain network of multiple facilities to include manufacturing and distribution centers. The DOE will lead the development, management, and deployment of the technical expertise / resources to deliver systems, technology, and creative technical solutions that deliver significant technological advantages. Strategic capabilities are a must, as well as being hands-on and comfortable with tactical execution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides leadership and direction in the development and implementation of strategies that provide the most cost-effective engineered asset design, asset lifecycle management, and technical support to all supply chain facilities
Provides leadership and transformational thinking in the application of automation to optimize material/product flow and eliminate repetitive unskilled manual tasks
Develops proactive strategies and tactics that continuously improve the quality, performance, and value of the company’s technical asset base and capital project execution programs
Responsible and accountable for the direction, strategy, and tactics of the engineering professionals relative to all aspects of equipment/systems engineering, project management and execution, standards, specifications, technical philosophy, idle asset management, safety design, regulatory requirements, and equipment/systems performance specifications
Takes a lead role to ensure execution of productivity and growth projects and PEAK/ Continuous Improvement initiatives
Leads the development, management, and deployment of a reliability and continuous improvement strategy by developing, managing, and leveraging external SMEs, (OEM), internal plant personnel, central team resources, and processes/methodologies that deliver the asset reliability program
Provides direction and leadership in the development of enterprise-wide technical specifications, processes, policies, and standards that ensure the highest technical standards are met. In addition, ensures alignment with central Newell standards and compliance with local/state/federal regulatory requirements.
Provides direction and leadership in the development of technical strategies that deliver the division goals and objectives.
Partners and engages across a wide scope of business functions including R&D, marketing, sales, finance, quality, safety, center supply chain, and Food supply chain operations.
Partners with the product innovation and commercialization teams to ensure effective alignment with Engineering and an emphasis on successful on-time new product launches.
Develop consistent and meaningful metrics for engineering organization.
Act as a change agent to lead change and technical innovation within supply chain manufacturing and distribution facilities
Initiate and manage process improvements and best practices driving key customer and productivity metrics.
Identify, design, and justify automated processes with proper ROI to improve supply chain cost to serve
Act as a liaison between Corporate Supply Chain and the BU supply chain leaders earning trust and influencing decisions to enable best practice implementation.
Project manage large complex initiatives providing direction to engineering resources and leadership in a matrix environment.
May perform other duties as required.
Minimum Job Qualifications and Requirements:
Must have a technical BS or MS degree in Engineering, with a minimum of 15 years of practical experience in manufacturing, distribution centers, packaging / processing technologies, and project management.
8 - 10+ years leading and managing engineering or technical team in a fast-paced supply chain CPG environment
Experience with various types of automation, automation vendors, and automation applications.
Strong strategic skills with ability and vision to map out "future state" business processes
Experience leading contract engineering teams with proven results.
Proven results in CPG supply operations process improvement.
Strong leadership skills with a proven record of project management success, project design and execution.
Excellent written & verbal communication, and people/organizational skills.
Ability to lead cross functional teams.
Operational Practice using Lean Thinking and Principles.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Significant travel is required.
